Tower of Babemoji (2015) is a triptych composed of hundreds of thousands of emojis, reimagining the biblical story of Babel. In the original tale, humankind’s ambition to build a tower into the heavens angers God, who responds by fracturing their language and halting the project. In this contemporary interpretation, God grants humanity a single, seemingly universal language—emojis. Yet beneath their surface simplicity, these pictographs harbor ambiguities, misinterpretations, and contextual gaps. The very tool intended to unify instead creates confusion, culminating in the tower’s downfall. By spotlighting the paradox of digital communication—where ubiquitous emojis often fail to convey genuine intent—Tower of Babemoji echoes the ancient struggle of Babel in a modern context.
